As the beaker above it cooled, the solution inside resolved into two distinct fluids, layered one atop another. Even at high heat, they remained immiscible. She clicked her mandibles in irritation. The footfalls of an approaching visitor interrupted her. She welcomed the distraction. Anything to justify the hiatus she felt too guilty to grant herself. Variks hobbled in, his fur collar matted by the lab’s humidity. The Vandal glanced surreptitiously toward Misraakskel, who was slumped on his throne nearby. Even though the troubled Kell was heavily sedated, Variks kept his voice low. “Variks has a new task for young Eido,” he muttered. Eido sighed. This was not the pleasant diversion she had hoped for. “I’m too busy to take on new jobs right now,” she objected. “There is a dispute between House Light and newcomers from House Salvation,” Variks continued, breezing past her objection. “A squabble over salvage rights. The jump drive of an ancient ship, found outside the City.” “That seems simple enough. Surely you can mediate.” “Of course. Variks is a Scribe of House Judgment. Are you?” “I want to be! Eventually. But…” She gestured with exasperation to her laboratory equipment, her ailing father, and her myriad failed attempts to cure him. “House Judgment keeps peace for all,” Variks replied gravely. “Not only one House, or one Kell. As a Scribe, your allegiance to House Light must always yield to a greater need.” Variks ushered his young pupil from the lab. “Come,” he encouraged her. “Help your kin. Create harmony, and it will follow you back here.” It was exactly the type of advice her father would have given. Eido relented, letting Variks lead her outside. Ill Omen Lore: Come what may. The Witch. The Adherent. Eris Morn placed both cards down on her worktable, the illuminated faces gleaming under the sharp light of her lamp. The Deck of Whispers had not sat idle since her metamorphoses had concluded. The cards had been consulted occasionally by herself and others, each supplicant approaching with a question and leaving with a new perspective. For now, this was all the cards could provide. They no longer whispered to her since her vengeance had been satisfied. But Eris could still feel the push and pull of the Hive spells woven through their being. To any other practitioner, they would be no more than flat images, a hint at some deeper meaning. However, they were so intimately tied to her that she could still read them, even without her terrifying morph. Savathûn and Xivu Arath. Where had they fled to? What were they planning? The sisters were at odds once again, the natural bond of their love and logic restored. Eris placed a third card beside the others. The Harbinger. So, she still had a role to play in all this. She stared down at the image of herself, running an ungloved fingertip along its edge. They would come for her soon. For a fleeting moment, Eris remembered the shape of her own claws. The power of the Hive in her grip. And best of all, the terror, the fear, the heartbreak as Xivu Arath was removed from her throne. The feeling evaporated. The card faces stared up at her. The three of them united once again: Eris Morn, Savathûn, and Xivu Arath. The cards spoke of confrontation, but also sorority. Xivu Arath had called her sister. Was she still? One final card. Lament. The visage of Oryx, his Dreadnaught, his logic and his laws. That phantom with a shadow so long it lingered over them long after his death. Something New Lore: “It’s new to me.” —Banshee-44 “Do you ever tire of the work?” asks Eva Levante. Banshee-44 looks up from his workbench. Eva often crosses in front of his kiosk on her walks to and from the Bazaar, striking up conversations with him in passing when she does. He briefly wonders if they’ve had this particular talk before; he wouldn’t put it past her to simply let it play out to spare him the embarrassment of not remembering it. “Can’t say that I do,” Banshee replies cordially. “Memory’s not so great. Every gun feels like a new one.” Eva nods as she takes a sip of tea from the mug in her hand. “It’s just that I see Guardians deliver parts to you all the time, and you seem to construct the same gun for them repeatedly. Are they not satisfied with what you provide?” Banshee chuckles. “Maybe.” He leans on the bench, looking at the various weapon components strewn about his shop. “It’s a bit like Solstice, now that I think about it.” That seems to pique Eva’s interest. “Oh?” she asks, eyebrow raised. “Guardians bring me scraps, pieces of guns they dismantled.” Banshee explains. “And I turn them into something new. Not always what the Guardian was hoping for, but they hold onto that hope and keep bringing me parts.” Eva smiles. “Same interaction, different outcome.” “Yeah. I guess you could say that.” “How wonderful,” Eva says cheerfully. She raises his cup to him and walks back to the Courtyard. “Definitely had that talk before,” Banshee says to himself.
